New restaurant opens in city centre

September 20, 2023

A brand-new independent restaurant has opened in the heart of the city at Catherine House in Stanhope Street and is already proving popular. This is the second outlet for Baja Mexicali. Run by Portsmouth business owners, the restaurant has 70 covers and has created 12 new jobs.

Robert Lee, one of three business owners said:

‘We were keen to try to expand on the success of the first restaurant in Whiteley and as Portsmouth is our hometown, we were really happy to be able to find a perfect space in a really central location. We are really excited to welcome the city’s residents to our brand-new restaurant.”

Baja is designed to appeal to all from families, shoppers, students, business people, couples and groups of friends.

The restaurant had its soft opening last week as students started to return to the city.

This is the second Baja Mexicali, the first site opened in Whiteley Shopping Centre in 2021.

Rob explains that “Portsmouth was however always on their radar as this is our home town and it’s where my other business interests lie as Baja is the sister venue to my first restaurant Maya in Southsea”

Baja is a more casual concept, designed to be good value for money but suitable for both quick lunches or romantic dinners with drinks.

The concept is Californian style Mexican which came about after multiple visits to southern California loving the food the Mexican immigrants have brought across the border.

Rob added “We love this style of food and feel it is somewhat underrepresented in UK restaurants”
