Work to transform Castle Road in Southsea into a safer, more attractive destination for residents and visitors is now complete.
This exciting project is part of Portsmouth City Council’s vision to enhance local business areas and create spaces where people can relax, shop, and enjoy the city’s unique character.
Castle Road is a thriving hub of independent shops and businesses and first became pedestrianised in 2020. The current improvements build on that success of a safer walking environment by introducing a level paved surface with a central pathway. New planters and trees will also add greenery and charm with the hidden benefit of sustainable drainage.
Public transport connections have also been improved, thanks to the updated Stagecoach number 18 bus route which goes right past the end of the road.
The Portsmouth City Council street scene and urban design, delivered by Colas Limited, follows extensive public consultation earlier this year. Castle Road is a key part of the council’s District Local Town Centre programme, funded to support vibrant, welcoming spaces for everyone.
