City centre hotel approved at former Post Office site

January 4, 2023

A 200-suite hotel earmarked for the former Post Office in Portsmouth’s city centre has secured planning approval.

The ground floor would contain an entrance lobby, main reception area meeting area, seated food and food preparation area, reception office, luggage store, laundry room, refuse and cycle store.  A gym is also planned.  The development proposal is contained within the footprint of the existing office block, with an additional two storeys proposed.

The application report stated

“The resultant building is considered to be of good architectural merit, incorporating a number of interesting design elements that would make a positive and distinctive contribution the character of the site, which is in much need of enhancement.”

Planning has also been approved for the eastern part of the Post Office  to build 19-storey residential tower. Both applications have been designed in harmony and together will form the regeneration of the whole site.

At ground floor level, the existing Post Office remains in use, while the depot has been vacant since 2016. The upper floors contain unoccupied office space.
